Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his army was preparing for further fighting in the east and called Russia’s promises to reduce military activity “nice phrases.”
Zelensky warned that Russian forces were gathering in preparation for a new offensive in the eastern Donbass region of Ukraine.
Russia said it would limit operations near the capital, Kiev, and the northern city of Chernihiv “to boost mutual trust” for peace talks, after the two sides met face-to-face in Istanbul on March 29.
Talks are expected to resume today via video link, said Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia.
“We do not trust anyone, not a single beautiful phrase,” Zelensky said in a video speech on March 30, adding that he believes Russian troops are regrouping to strike the eastern Donbas region.
“We will not give up on anything. “And we will fight for every meter of our land, for every person,” Zelensky said, reiterating his call for Western military assistance.
