Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said 87 people died in a Russian airstrike in the city of Desna last Tuesday, making it the largest number of military deaths in a single attack since the start of the war on February 24.
The day it happened, a Russian military spokesman said high-precision, long-range missiles had hit Ukrainian reserves at a training center near Desna and elsewhere.
The city is northeast of Kiev, in the Chernihiv region, and nearby there is a training base.
The Ukrainian president did not say whether the victims were military or civilian.
“Today we finished the work in Desna, In Desna under the ruins there were 87 victims, 87 corpses” tha Zelenskyy.
This number has not been independently verified. In April, at least 52 people were killed at a train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk.
