Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed an emergency EU summit on Monday, urging member states to end internal “quarrels” by saying they only help Moscow more, and urging the bloc to approve more. sanctions against Russia.
“All quarrels in Europe must end, internal disputes that only encourage Russia to put more and more pressure on you, on all of Europe. The sixth package of sanctions must be agreed upon. It must be effective, including oil. “To make Russia feel the consequences of what it is doing to Ukraine and all of Europe.”
EU leaders are meeting for an emergency summit in a bid to reach an agreement on a six-point package of sanctions against Russia that would include a ban on Russian oil. But Hungary, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas, has so far said it will not support the plan.
But European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the European Union “could not afford” not to reach an agreement on a sixth round of sanctions.
“I understand the realities that different countries face, but there is a limit to how much flexibility we can allow without losing credibility with our populations,” she said.
Poland, meanwhile, proposed the introduction of a price equalization system in the European Union so that the other EU member would no longer benefit from the continued import of Russian oil.
However, Polish President Matthew Morawiecki said he remained optimistic that EU leaders would be able to agree on an oil embargo against Russia at the ongoing summit.
