Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had called up reservists to the army for a special period, but rejected the idea of announcing a general mobilization.
The announcement comes as Russia announced it would send troops to eastern Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 21 recognized the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are controlled by Moscow-backed separatists, as independent states.
Zelenskiy said he was still pursuing diplomatic channels to resolve the crisis and welcomed the willingness expressed by Turkey to participate in multilateral meetings, but said Ukraine would not hand over any territory to Russia.

Putin’s announcement of recognition of the two separatist regions has raised fears that Russia will leave Ukraine.
According to the United States, Russia has amassed close to 190,000 troops along Ukraine’s borders.
On February 22, the Supreme Chamber of the Russian Parliament approved President Putin’s request that use military force outside Russia.
The United States and the European Union have imposed economic sanctions on Russia over its decision to recognize the two separatist regions.
