Rescuers found the body of 25-year-old Alisonstar Molaf of New Jersey in the Wallace River Reserve in Washington on Sunday after splitting from a long-term nature excursion partner with whom they had previously consumed psychedelic mushrooms, U.S. officials said.
Authorities said the pair had split up during the excursion to the mountain park after consuming powerful hallucinogenic mushrooms.
“It is believed that the two excursionists were under the influence of mushrooms,” the local sheriff’s office told the network. NJ Advance Media. “The death seems to have been accidental.”
The other excursionist was in good condition, although together with the unfortunate colleague they had started the journey of at least three hours which is considered very challenging, according to experts at AllTrails.
“For our angel, the memories you left with family and friends will be remembered forever,” a family friend wrote on the fundraising page for Molaf’s funeral.
Magic mushrooms contain the natural active ingredient psilocybin, which has recently been decriminalized as a sedative in some US states.
Its use can cause overdose but much evidence has shown how its effects have helped in rehabilitation from significant injuries or disabilities.
Magic mushrooms have long been used in Latin America as substances of relaxation and meditation, by means of the hallucinations and altered state of consciousness they create.
