An elementary school teacher has been beaten to death in a seemingly unmotivated macabre attack as she runs into a crowded park in Ireland.
Ashling Murphy, 22, a teacher at Tullamore Elementary School, was killed Wednesday afternoon near the banks of the Grand Canal River.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being questioned by authorities as police are appealing for witnesses.
Miss Murphy was running along the shores of the Cappincur Canal, around 4pm on Wednesday when she was brutally attacked.
According to the local network Independent.ie, Murphy came from a respected family in the area and was well known in the regional music scene.
The newspaper added that the suspect in the murder is a Romanian citizen in his 40s who has lived in the area for a long time and had problems with the locals.
Two women reportedly witnessed the attack and saw the suspect leave the scene. He was arrested a little later.
“The area where the crime took place is frequented by residents and is often used for fun or running,” said local police chief Eamonn Curley.
“Ashling was a teacher at Durrow School. “Our prayers go to Ashling’s parents and family, fellow teachers and students who will be without their teacher.”
“Anyone with information on the incident should contact the authorities to ensure that justice is done in the crime,” officials added in the statement.
