A devoted young mother has taken her own life in Britain after failing to cope with a series of serious events, including a brutal sexual assault.
32-year-old Nicola McIntyre, suffered mental health problems after the nightmares of horrific gang rape and betrayal by a co-worker, was told in Hull court.
The supermarket employee who was described as “loving and fun” by her two sisters, was found dead in the east of her town Hull, on August 29 last year after taking a large amount of sedatives, given by doctors .
Her sister Sarah McIntyre said: “She lit up the room when she came in and just wanted to laugh. “In family gatherings, her laughter was always heard.”
“She was family oriented, she adored children and animals. “He adored fairy tales and often gave us well-thought-out gifts with dedications.”
In the investigations into Nicola’s death it was said that she had started showing mental health problems since the separation of her parents when she was a child.
Her sister Sarah said Nicola left school at the age of 16 to learn the hairdressing profession, and that from the age of 19 she had a series of difficult relationships.
In court it was said that Nicola had a son, with whose father she was separated.
Nicola had left the couple’s home, initially living alone with her son, and then in a new home when she met another partner.
When she started her new job, Nicola befriended a colleague she suspected of working behind the scenes with her partner, and later admitted that she slept with Nicola’s boyfriend.
At the same time she began to experience “vivid memories and nightmares” from a gang rape she had suffered.
Her sister Hayley Todd told the court: “I saw that she was changing, becoming more and more depressed.”
“She told me that she had asked for help from some mental health charities, but she felt that they were not helping her and that she herself was failing.”
In the last months of her life Nicola did not feel well and was afraid she would go crazy, says Hayley.
She adds that coronavirus isolation had a severe effect on Nicola’s mental health, which along with difficulties with her company, added to her anxiety.
On August 27, Hayley said Nicola looked “very happy” when the three sisters communicated in a video call with WhatsApp.
The call ended around 6pm, but unfortunately the next morning they were informed of Nicola’s death.
Forensic doctor Rosemary Baxter said Nicola had died by suicide.
In the investigation, Nicola’s sister Sarah said: “We are still trying to understand Nicola’s death. “We are heartbroken, we will miss him every day.”
