Carmen Tarleton, who had been disfigured after a brutal attack by her ex-husband, has become the first person in the world to perform two facial transplants.
The domestic violence survivor says she is “very happy” with the new look, after the problems she encountered after the first transplant.
In 2007, Carmen Tarleton suffered horrific burns when her cruel ex-husband hit her with a baseball bat and threw abrasive chemicals in her face.
He attacked with caustic soda, the substance used to unblock pipes and disinfect toilets, which blinded him in one eye and left him severely disfigured.
The former nurse, who lives in Vermont, USA, says she underwent a face transplant in 2013 which lasted for seven years, when her body began to reject it and “returned to the disfigured state”.
After more than 70 reconstructive surgeries, Carmen was offered a second transplant.
A team of 40 doctors worked for 20 hours to complete complicated surgery at Boston Women’s Hospital.
Plastic surgeon Dr Bohdan Pomahac, who has been treating Carmen for more than 10 years, worried that her body might reject the second face as well.
He said in an interview: “It is always complicated. The second time I believe it was more difficult as we had a lot of strangers. “We were very lucky to find a donor who had bodily characteristics similar to Carmen, as if he had a tribal connection with her.”
The face donor was the mother of a child Casey Harrington Labrie, who died of a fentanyl drug overdose at the age of 36, after a long battle with addiction.
Carmen thanked Casey’s family for what she called “the greatest gift anyone could have given her” and said she was “very happy” with the new face.
The woman said: “This is my face, this is what they gave me. It is not the face I was born with but it is mine. “Every time I look in the mirror I think of Casey.”
The woman adds that she is excited to see “what life will bring me” and that she does not want to “focus on negative things”.
Herbert Rodgers, the perpetrator of the inhumane attack on Carmen, died in prison in 2017 after being sentenced to at least 30 years.
This month in Britain, a man who has been blinded by his ex-girlfriend’s sulfuric acid attack said he still has insomnia and nightmares about the episode.
Daniel Rotariu, 35, was sleeping when Katie Leong threw acid on his face in bed on the night of July 2016 in Leicester.
He recalls arguing with Leong, and then going to bed, before waking up from unimaginable pain.
He points to Nottingham Post: “It was about 10-20 seconds, at that moment I believed I was in a dream until the pain started to become real. I thought ‘What is going on like this? “What is this pain?”
Leong was arrested and charged with attempted murder. She was jailed forever, with a minimum of 17 years behind bars.
