Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of trying to humiliate the United Nations by firing rockets at Kiev during a visit by its secretary general, António Guterres.
The attack shook the efforts of the capital’s residents to return to normal as the war seemed to have shifted eastward.
In his address to the nation on Thursday evening, Mr. Zelensky said that this requires a strong and appropriate response. Zelensky also said that Ukrainian forces were hindering Russia’s advance in the southeast of the country.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to ensure a safe passage for stranded residents in the city of Mariupol, which has been largely reduced to rubble as a result of a 2-month siege.
Russia hit several targets across Ukraine on Thursday, including Kiev, where rockets also hit a block of flats, killing one person and injuring 10 others.
Referring to the same attack, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday that it had destroyed a factory of the missile manufacturer Artem in Kiev.
The attack in Kiev came just an hour after Mr Zelensky’s press conference with Mr Guterres, who condemned the attacks on civilians and visited some of the destroyed facilities in and around Kiev.
These were the heaviest bombings undertaken by Russian forces against the capital, since their withdrawal a few weeks ago, after failing to take it under control. Moscow encountered strong Ukrainian resistance, reinforced by Western weapons, which impeded the advance of its troops and forced them to withdraw to regroup.
Part of the troops are making efforts to advance towards the industrial center in the east of the country, Donbas, which Moscow says is currently its target. Airstrikes and artillery shelling have made the movement of journalists extremely dangerous and this has made it difficult to provide a complete picture of the fighting in the east.
Both Ukraine and Moscow-backed rebels fighting in the east are imposing strict restrictions on reports from war zones.
