Recent statistics from the Tirana Judicial District Court, but also from the district courts, show that the initiators to go to divorce are women.
Vjollca Pustina, a divorce lawyer for almost 20 years, explains some of the reasons why women leave men:
“The first reason is that women no longer accept the violence perpetrated by men. At the same time this has come as a result of the independence they have, and especially economic independence. Young couples I think have started not to suffer mentality and prejudices, especially women. The last two cases I have had relate to a lady with a child at the age of 10 years. Despite her husband begging her the moment she came to the court door, she refused to return, claiming that he did not change and would continue to be violent. The other case was related to the use of violence. They had filed for divorce three times, agreed, and in the end the two split up”.
The lack of family case judges has led to longer divorce trials aggravating the situation, if there are conflicts that do not go away.
The lawyer claims that there is a difference between village women and those in the city.
“The women of the village are thought 100 times to go to divorce, or to report the man to the police for domestic violence. As the women of the city have begun to free themselves from that mentality of what X or Y said about my family. I insist that couples do not go to divorce without trying and giving each other the opportunity, as those who suffer the most from the consequences of a divorce are the children. Separation directly affects the mental health of the child“, Says Pustina.
