This Saturday marked the eighth citizen protest against the price increase in Tirana. The 24-hour protest was announced today, if the government does not take the necessary measures to meet their demands.
In addition to the banners, some citizens were seen with the Ukrainian flag in hand. According to them, this was a response to the “arrogance of the prime minister.” They said that awareness of the war that is taking place there, does not mean that they do not stand up for their rights.
The protest started from “Skënderbej” square where the citizens gathered to then march towards the Prime Minister’s Office and to make all their calls there.
Speaking at the national protest in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, the activist Adriatik Lapaj also listed the demands that the citizens have for the government, to stop the increase of prices. He urged the protesters to “keep them under pressure to fulfill our dignified demands.”
“This is a protest for dignity, for the mothers and fathers of this country for our grandparents, so that the children of this country do not run away anymore. This square these citizens have managed to unite in the face of arrogance by stopping the rise in oil prices by forcing them to lower it, forcing them to move from theory ‘the state has nothing to do with theory we are doing what we can they can do more than they are not their money they are your money. One of the protesting citizens who spoke at the rally in front of the Prime Minister’s Office showed the plan that if they do not receive a response from the government for their demands, “we will not be torn from the square”.
“Today we are gathered here not to leave this square until the Prime Minister meets our demands. Today we show the oligarchs and the prime minister how you have increased the prices and they give false tenders. Today we are very much in this square we need to fill up and more. If the requirements are not met, citizens will not be evicted from the square. 540 thousand ALL this month, expenses only for bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Who has 540 thousand ALL? The revolt of the citizens came after the morning of March 7, when the prices of various products, in supermarkets, or other services, such as road transport, experienced a drastic increase.
The price of oil, within 24 hours, cost them 30-35 lek more than the day before.
Thus, Wednesday afternoon found the citizens under the door of the “head of government”, as if to demand “accountability” for every penny spent more.
For several days the manifestations were spread in the main axes of Tirana and in some cities of Albania.
On the other hand, the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama has considered them as “the most shameful protests that Albania has neither had nor will ever have”.
He added that even the supportive reaction to them is shameful.
What does the resistance pack contain?
It is a seven-point package.
The first is the immediate outflow of ALL 3.6 million to index pensions. The second point will be the compensation of basket prices for 434 thousand beneficiaries.
So, the Government will provide 3 thousand old lekë for several categories: pensioners, people with disabilities and family members with economic assistance.
Also, the third point will be support for farmers, with duty-free oil will go to $ 1.5 billion.
The fourth point is the support for the citizens who use the urban lines, depositing 500 million ALL. This will not affect the ticket price.
Also, the law will enter into force, for halving the tax on salaries over 500 thousand old lekë.
The sixth point is the increase of the minimum wage, which in April goes to 320 thousand old ALL.
The last is energy price protection – the government will deposit $ 200 million.
