More than 200,000 tonnes of medical waste, mostly plastic, have been collected worldwide as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
According to WHO estimates, billions of vaccines since the beginning of the pandemic have generated at least 144 thousand tons of needles, syringes and collection containers used for them.
Moreover, between March 2020 and November 2021 alone, the United Nations sent 87,000 tons of protective sanitary clothing. “The tests that were used for the coronavirus contain up to 2,600 tons of additional waste and 731 thousand liters of chemical waste. “Protective masks for private use are not included in the assessments,” said the WHO.
“COVID-19 has forced the world to deal with the gaps and neglected aspects of waste flow and the way we produce, use and dispose of them,” said Maria Neira, WHO’s Environment, Climate Change and Health Officer.
Even before the pandemic, the WHO warned that one-third of all health facilities were unable to properly dispose of their waste.
