A subtype of the Omicron virus known as “BA.2” has been found in five African countries, a World Health Organization scientist said today, adding that she was concerned about the development.
“BA.2 is registered in five countries, namely Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, as well as in the Republic of South Africa,” said Niksi Gumede-Moeleci in an online press conference, reports Reuters.
“We are very concerned,” she added. According to preliminary data, this type of Omicron is more contagious than other types of Omicron, announced yesterday the World Health Organization.
Although BA.1 still accounts for more than 96 percent of Omicron sequence cases, BA.2 accounts for more than half of Omicron sequence samples in some countries, the WHO said in a weekly report.
