The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted a significant decline in the global number of new COVID-19 cases.
“The global number of new cases fell by 19% from the number reported last week, while the number of new deaths remained similar to last week,” the WHO said in its weekly epidemiological update.
In six regions of the world, just over 16 million new cases and just under 75 thousand new deaths have been reported. The pandemic has peaked so far in the last week of January with over 22 million cases.
However, the WHO has not only reported a decline in new cases of coronavirus, but also a steady increase in Omicron subunit BA.2, which could be transmitted even faster.
BA.2 accounted for more than one-fifth of all Omicron cases analyzed worldwide in early February. According to the WHO, BA.2 is on the rise in countries with the Omicron wave.
