The World Health Organization (WHO) said the Omicron variant of the coronavirus (COVID-19) would not be the last and that the virus was continuing to “evolve”.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at the first press conference of the year with global health experts at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva, stated that last week the highest number of COVID-19 cases was recorded since from the beginning of the pandemic.
Ghebreyesus said the Omicron variant is milder compared to Deltan, especially in vaccinated persons.
“Like the previous versions, Omicron is hospitalized and killed. “Omicron creates a tsunami effect, spreads very quickly and puts a lot of pressure on health systems around the world.”
On the other hand, Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO team for the fight against COVID-19, when asked about Omicron, also underlined that all current vaccines are effective against this variant.
Kerkhove stressed that the Omicron variant did not become harsher thanks to vaccinations in general and once again invited everyone to make their own vaccines.
She warned that Omicron would not be the latest version of COVID-19.
“Unfortunately, the Omicron will not be the last option. “The virus continues to ‘evolve,'” Kerkhove said.
