The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, said the omicron variant of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) may be milder than Delta, but remains dangerous, especially for the unvaccinated.
In a coronavirus webinar, Ghebreyesus said a record 15 million cases of COVID-19 are thought to have been reported last week, but that the death rate remains stable and could be reduced by vaccinating more people.
“Although the number of hospitalized patients is increasing in many countries, this is not the level we have seen in previous waves,” he said. He noted the fact that the unvaccinated make up a large proportion of hospital admissions worldwide.
The head of the WHO said vaccines help prevent more serious consequences and deaths, but not complete transmission.
