Disorders in the delivery of basic health services, such as vaccinations or treatment programs for diseases such as AIDS, were reported in 92 percent of 129 countries, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) study published today.
The survey, conducted in November and December 2021, shows that services are “severely affected” and that “little or no progress” has been made compared to the survey from the beginning of 2021, the WHO said in a statement.
“The results of this survey underscore the importance of urgent action to address key health system challenges, recover services and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the WHO said.
Ambulance service has deteriorated compared to the previous survey. Disorders in emergency care delivery were reported by 36 per cent of countries, an increase of 29 per cent in early 2021 and 21 per cent in the first survey in 2020.
The provision of optional surgeries such as hip and knee replacement has been discontinued in 59 per cent of countries and deficiencies in palliative rehabilitation and care have been reported in approximately half of the countries. The survey was conducted at a time of a huge increase in the number of infected people in many countries due to the more contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus, which has aggravated hospitals.
