The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, has stated that the new Omicron strain of COVID-19 coronavirus has been confirmed in 77 countries and is spreading faster than any previous type, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
“Omicron is probably in most countries, even if it has not been discovered yet. “Omicron is spreading at a pace we have never seen before,” Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Geneva.
The Omicron type, first discovered last month in South Africa, was declared a sort of nuisance by the United Nations (UN) health agency.
Ghebreyesus expressed concern for people who consider the Omicron type to be mild, stressing that even if it causes less serious illness, the large number of cases could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems.
He called on countries to implement restrictive measures along with vaccines to get out of the crisis.
“There are no vaccines instead of masks. There are no vaccines instead of distancing. There are no vaccines instead of ventilation or hand hygiene. Do it all. Do it constantly. “Do well,” said Ghebreyesus.
The WHO chief said some countries had launched vaccine-boosting campaigns, adding that this could lead to “the accumulation of vaccines we saw this year and worsen inequality”.
“Let me be very clear… WHO is not against amplifiers. We are against inequality. Our main concern is to save lives everywhere. Providing boosters to groups at low risk of serious illness or death simply endangers the lives of those at high risk or who are still awaiting their primary dose due to supply constraints. “The priority in every and globally should be the protection of the least protected, not the most protected,” said Ghebreyesus.
Sharing the data, he said 41 countries have not yet been able to vaccinate 10 per cent of their population and 98 countries have not reached 40 per cent.
“If we end inequality, we end the pandemic. “If we allow inequality to continue, we allow the pandemic to continue.”
