Russia now has enough forces to carry out a major military operation against Ukraine, and such an operation could be launched “at any moment,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
Sullivan, speaking to reporters on Friday, without giving specific details, said Americans still in Ukraine should leave within the next 24-48 hours.
He said the Russian occupation could be launched through airstrikes, which would make it difficult to leave Ukraine.
Sullivan said US intelligence believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin could order a halt before the end of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and that a swift attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was possible.
Sullivan made the remarks after US President Joe Biden held a video chat with transatlantic leaders, with the aim of unifying as the crisis between Russia and Ukraine worsens.
Sullivan said it was still unclear whether Putin had finally given the order to launch the invasion. He said he expects Biden to request a telephone conversation with Putin soon.
The United States is continuing to withdraw embassy staff in Kiev, and US President Joe Biden has called on Americans in Ukraine to leave immediately.
Russia has amassed more than 100,000 troops along its border with Ukraine, but has denied plans to invade Ukraine.
