The White House’s COVID response team said Friday that all approved coronavirus vaccines are effective and safe, and urged Americans to get whatever vaccine is offered at their clinic. The reaction follows the comment of the mayor of Detroit who said he did not want the vaccine produced by Johnson & Johnson and had rejected the offer for a quantity of this vaccine for use in his city.
At a news conference Thursday, Mayor Mike Duggan said he had not accepted the Johnson & Johnson vaccine contingent, adding that although it is a good vaccine, he believed the Pfizer-BioNTech and Modernas vaccines are better and he wanted “Best” for the people of Detroit.
At the press conference on Friday, coronavirus adviser Andy Slavitt said the White House had contacted the mayor and that there had been a misunderstanding and Mr Duggan had not intended to refuse the vaccines. “In fact, he looks forward to Johnson & Johnson vaccines.” Dr. Anthony Fauci reiterated that all three vaccines are “extremely” effective in preventing serious illness and death. He advised Americans to get whatever vaccine is offered to them because it is important to be vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Rochelle Walensky said she hopes the agency will issue official guidelines for those who have been vaccinated. She said she understands that people can hardly wait to know what they are allowed to do, but the center will make sure it is giving the right advice.
The center’s guidelines will answer a number of questions about activities that vaccinators can do, such as putting on a mask or not, flying or going to restaurants. More than 54 million people in the US have so far received 1 dose of the vaccine, while more than 27 million people are fully vaccinated.
