A lioness has instructed a lone little African antelope to her herd, something rare captured by cameras.
The official Tanzanian National Parks Twitter account posted a video in which a lioness is seen walking side by side with her little one half her size as she accompanied the little animal to the Serengeti National Park.
Such behavior is very unusual and has led Pascal Shelutete, spokesman for the Tanzania National Parks Authority, to tell the BBC that the lioness’s mother’s instincts must have overcome her natural predatory instincts.
What makes such a fact even more interesting is that lions are ‘generalist hypermorodists’, which means that the vast majority of their diet consists of meat and is not limited to any kind of animal.
However, African zebras and antelopes are among the most frequently targeted animals by lions, as they are slower and easier to catch.
Healthy adult lions should consume an average of 11-16 kg of meat per day and given that it is rare for lions to enjoy successful outdoor hunting on a daily basis, it is very unusual to see one of the largest hunters in world to “lose” an opportunity for a light meal.
