Varhelyi: I am pleased and proud to be among you today to celebrate this historic decision. The beginning of a new phase is marked. I want to thank the Czech presidency, as well as the previous ones, for the whole process. This historic decision sends a strong message to the Western Balkans. 8 years after the status today, marks the beginning of a new journey.
My message is simple: we want you to be part of the European family. Meeting today sends with an important massage.
From today we will inject more credibility and clear political thrust. Albania should trust the commission. In the afternoon we start the screening process.
I am fully confident that Albania is determined to join the EU as it has done so far. Even after the 2020 decision. We need consensus to make this happen. The negotiations will affect the everyday life of the Albanian citizen. It will bring immediate benefits to the citizens, Everyone will work for it. The path to membership has just begun.
