Since the beginning of the Russian occupation, the first lady of Ukraine has been hiding with her two children. A difficult question her 9-year-old son continues to ask is when the war will end, Olena Zelenska said in an exclusive interview with ABC News.
“Unfortunately, I do not think any Ukrainian would be able to answer that question,” Zelenska told Good Morning America co-presenter Robin Roberts in her first television interview since the invasion. , where he added that giving territory to Russia would not stop the war.
“Even if we considered territories, the aggressor would not stop there. “He would continue the pressure, he would continue to take more and more steps forward, more and more attacks against our territory.”
The world is seeing Zelenskyy’s ‘true identity’
Zelenska’s son has also continued to ask about his father, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, from whom they have been separated since the beginning of the war.
“We said goodbye to each other from day one. “And over the next two months, we only had the opportunity to talk on the phone,” Zelenska said.
As he coped with the stress of the war, she said she was “proud” that the whole world had come to see Zelensky’s “true identity”. She said Zelenskyy’s decision to run for president of Ukraine amid a successful comedy career was “unexpected”.
“There is a feature in Volodymyr that is very important, he likes to change things around him,” she said, adding that she would support him in any way she could.
“If one day he said, ‘OK, I’m going to space as an astronaut,’ then, well, I would have to fly with him,” she said with a laugh.
Zelenska said that she does not feel as brave as her husband, but as the first lady, she feels motivated to “continue to work to do my part in order to get closer to our victory”.
“I realized that I have to be strong, that I have to be brave, that I have to support it,” she said.
Zelenska has drawn attention to women involved in the war, saying in an Instagram post in March that the Ukrainian resistance “has a particularly feminine face.”
“I have always thought that Ukrainian women are the best. “And I was really proud of the way Ukrainian women behaved during the war,” she said. “Now, I’m proud of the fact that the whole world has seen the true face of Ukrainian women.”
Zelenska said there are countless stories that have inspired her, though one, in particular, involved a maternity nurse in the port city of Mariupol.
“She continued to work, despite all the shelling,” she said. “There was no water supply. There was no electricity supply. “And she continued to work until that maternity ward was completely destroyed.”
The nurse, Tatiana, assisted in the birth of 27 newborns during that time, Zelenska said. Another story of heroism involved a 15-year-old girl named Leeza, who helped evacuate four people from a village in eastern Ukraine even after both of her legs were injured during the shelling.
“When I saw him in the news report… this was the face of a child,” Zelenska said. “And yet, she found the courage to continue driving.”
