The European Parliament will call for restrictions on EU countries importing Russian oil and gas into the bloc, as it calls for even tougher sanctions aimed at ‘strategically weakening’ Russia’s economy and its ability to wage war.
The text will be voted on after a speech addressed to MEPs by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is expected to address the assembly in Brussels via direct link.
MEPs are arguing for tougher sanctions in response to Russian attacks on civilian areas and infrastructure.
In a resolution likely to be adopted on Wednesday, MEPs also call on the EU to close ports to Russian ships and refuse entry to ships destined for Russia, with the exception of those carrying vital humanitarian supplies. He also proposes measures to restrict imports of Russia’s most important export goods, including oil and gas, though he does not call for a ban.
MEPs also want all sanctions proposed by Russia to be reflected in Belarus, which has been a starting point for Russian aggression.
After the Ukrainian government submitted an application for EU membership on Monday, the resolution calls on the EU institutions to “work towards granting EU candidate status to Ukraine as part of a “merit-based process“, Continuing Ukraine’s integration into the EU common market.
