The Western Balkans appear to be high on the agenda of France, which has held the six-month presidency of the European Union since January 1st.
Eliza chief Emmanuel Macron said that during this period, his country will work closely with the European Commission regarding the region. The French president made his comments during a joint press conference with the chairwoman of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The latter welcomed the fact that France, a country of great political weight and experience, has assumed the presidency of the Presidency and stressed that the institution it leads will be available to cooperate in the realization of common EU priorities. Sources from the French presidency stated that Paris will work hard during these six months to advance the enlargement process with the countries of the Western Balkans region, given the fulfillment of conditions in this process, according to the new enlargement methodology.
According to diplomatic sources, France is especially expected to work on overcoming obstacles to launching membership negotiations with Albania and northern Macedonia. Following the formation of the new Government in Bulgaria, a solution is expected to be found to remove the obstacles that this country has placed on the start of membership negotiations with Northern Macedonia. During its presidency, France plans to organize a special conference dedicated to the Western Balkans, which will discuss specific problems, especially political tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
