Valeria Yezhova is only 10 years old and she is thinking about her country by contributing to the games of checkers.
She sits at a small folding table outside shopping malls in Kiev, waiting for someone to sit in the chair across from her and try to play for contributions.
All the money the little girl is collecting to help the Ukrainian army, and recently the number of interested people has started to grow.
“We are helping the Ukrainian army”, writes on the placard above her modest desk.
Despite the fact that people can sit down to play, the occasions on which she loses are rare, as she is a World and European Checkers Champion for this age.
Her mother told about CNN that the little girl’s desire to do something good for Ukraine pushed her into something she does with great passion.
After spending more than a week outside the mall, Jezhova had raised $700. She decided to donate the money to a foundation, which has been raising money to buy humanitarian aid and equipment for the Ukrainian army.
People did not hesitate to get autographs or take photos with the 10-year-old, who is doing a very humanitarian work.
On all the days she has gone out to play, Jezhova has also faced air raid sirens, forcing her to leave.
“Of course I would like to lead a normal life, but during the war it is difficult. This is an unpleasant feeling, there are many negative emotions“, said the little girl.
Yezhova’s family spent the first week of the war in a school basement as Russian forces occupied a neighborhood outside Kiev where her grandparents live.
They fled to the western city of Lviv as the fighting intensified, but eventually returned to the capital.
Jezhova’s growing success and fame has encouraged others in her checkers club to follow her lead and hit the streets to raise money for Ukraine’s military campaign.
Next month she will return to Turkey for the European Youth Championship, but this time she does not expect such a thing as she will face players up to 13 years old.
