Dozens of Çermë farmers have gathered this morning in protest of the low price at which watermelon is being sold.
They blame the collection points in Divjaka that according to them are lowering the price for the watermelon of Çerma.
According to them, Divjaka watermelon was sold at a price almost up to 400 old lek, while Çermë watermelon, which has been on the market for almost a week, is not sold for more than 100 lek per kilogram.
Unlike other years where traders from Kosovo came to farmers’ plots this year no truck from Kosovo approached the farmers as they went to the collection points.
Farmers say that the cost is very high as the prices of the whole watermelon cultivation process doubled, from seeds, fertilizers, inputs, fuel, etc.
In support of them was MP Erion Brace who has long been the opposition voice of the government for farmers, where he accused the collection points and traders who are abusing prices.
“At a price of 100 lek, these farmers are immersed, and the problem is that it is not an individual who is immersed, but the largest economy in this country.”
Brace accuses the Ministry of Finance which should control the entire fiscal system for the abusers who are abusing.
The Çermë area is one of the largest in watermelon cultivation. This year in this area are about 100 hectares of watermelon, which is in danger of rotting.
