Divjaka has the right climate and people to be the first country in Albania to start exporting watermelon.
Ristan Janko cultivates watermelon in an area of 10 ha. To ensure a high price, the farmer says he planted the variety in greenhouses that guarantees its antiquity and quality.
“We have been working with Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria for almost 13 years and we have a satisfactory contract the first year that the foreign market requires watermelon in August and September so no produce will remain on the ground.”.
Although the area of land planted with watermelon is the same as that of a year ago, this time the farmer says he will earn more money because a watermelon seed weighs a few kilograms more.
“The production is excellent. A watermelon seed person 10-15 kg with my eye weighs 4 watermelon seeds “.
To achieve this production, you need hours of work in the sun and rain. Seeing his father’s trouble, Franci sought to leave agriculture to become a footballer, but this remains only a dream. But the boy who once followed the ball, today follows the watermelon.
“We also depend a lot on Greece, because the watermelon market is on the stock exchange. If they come out cheap we are obliged to reduce the prices too. Today, for example, a kilogram of watermelon is 300 lek. “This is a good price.”
Large areas of land have been planted with this agricultural crop in Divjaka. All this watermelon of the Eros variety will leave tonight for European countries. This year the production is good, while the price remains to be seen what will happen by the end of the season.
