On Thursday last week, Ukrainians were awakened by explosions in some of the country’s cities as many of them rushed to leave Kiev.
Families in Kiev have spoken to CNN indicating they were puzzled as they had to leave their homes, face danger on the streets or stay.
There were long lines of traffic in Kiev on Thursday morning as Ukrainians left on the opposite side of the border with Russia.
The war did not prevent Yaryna Arieva and her partner Sviatoslav Fursn from getting married while the sirens of the airstrikes were heard in the background.
“It was scary. “It is the happiest moment of your life and you listen to it”, said Arieva.
They had planned to get married on May 6 and celebrate at a restaurant overlooking the Dnieper River, the 21-year-old said. They do not know what the future holds, but they are determined to stay and fight. After the wedding, the couple prepared to join forces to defend the country.
