World food prices could rise by up to 20% as a result of the war in Ukraine, warns the UN food agency.
In a preliminary assessment the agency said it was unclear whether Ukraine would be able to reap crops during the conflict, while uncertainty is also heightened for Russian food exports.
Russia is the world’s largest exporter of grain and Ukraine is the fifth largest, according to the organization. Together, they provide 19% of the world ‘s supply of barley, 14% of wheat and 4% of maize, accounting for more than a third of global cereal exports.
Interruptions in the agricultural activities of these two major exporters of basic commodities could seriously escalate food insecurity globally, Director-General Qu Dongyu said in a statement.
About 50 countries, including many of the least developed countries, depend on Russia and Ukraine for 30% or more of their grain supplies, leaving them particularly vulnerable. The global number of malnourished people could increase by 8 to 13 million people by 2022/23.
