Ukrainians are spending a different Valentine’s this year, as Russian aggression escalates into fears of an invasion.
Amid preparations for war in the border areas, the citizens of Kiev are keeping calm, following numerous calls from the president.
Despite the threat of a new war with Russia, life goes on normally in the Ukrainian capital, as a couple are celebrated and seen taking pictures in the square near a cathedral in Kiev.
Some of them are overwhelmed by fear, tension and the thought of leaving Ukraine, even on this day when love should prevail and not war.
Instead of roses and gifts for their loved ones, Ukrainians have already taken up arms to be prepared for Russian aggression.
Moscow has amassed over 100,000 troops near the Russian border with Ukraine positioned on three fronts, where they can attack from moment to moment.
In recent developments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has suggested to President Vladimir Putin that Moscow pursue a diplomatic path in its efforts to secure guarantees from the West.
Lavrov told Putin that the United States had put forward concrete proposals for reducing military risks, but said responses from the European Union and the NATO military alliance were unsatisfactory.
In a televised address, Putin appeared asking Lavrov if he had a chance to reach an agreement to address Russia’s security concerns, or if it was simply entering into difficult negotiations.
The comments appeared to signal a reduced chance of imminent Russian military action following repeated warnings from the United States that Russia could attack Ukraine at any time.
Lavrov said he had received “unsatisfactory” responses to a letter he sent to dozens of members of the European Union and NATO on the issue of “indivisible security” – a reference to Russia’s complaint that Ukraine and Western countries are strengthening security. at the expense of Russia and that this is contrary to international agreements.
