A bomb blast in the early hours of Sunday, by the Russian military at a military base in the city of LVIV, which is just 80 kilometers from the border with Poland, a NATO member, has escalated the war in Ukraine.
The International Center for Peace and Security in the Javoriv region of LVIV, which was established in 2007 to train the Ukrainian armed forces, especially peacekeeping missions, was bombed.
The attack confirmed that 35 people lost their lives and 134 others were injured, while the Russian Ministry of Defense says that it has killed 180 mercenaries.
Dozens of wounded soldiers have been taken to a hospital near Yavoriv, a town in western Ukraine 10km from the border with Poland. After receiving first aid, many of the injured were transported by ambulance to major hospitals in the region.
“We are afraid, but we are staying here, we have a child, the grandson, who is only three weeks old and we are staying without escaping. We live on the eighth floor and it’s scary. The building will fall if hit and the basement is not an option“, Says a woman.
White House security chief Jake Sullivan reacted after the attack by saying that even if an inch of NATO territory is accidentally attacked, the fifth defense item will be activated and the response will be immediate.
The bombing of Lviv is a turning point in the Russian attack, for the very importance of this city, as a cultural center of Ukraine while the historic center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There were also attacks at an airport in LVIV’s neighboring city of Ivano-Frankivsk, which was almost completely destroyed by a Russian airstrike, said city mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv.
The Russian bombing did not spare the monastery in the Donetsk Oblast region of eastern Ukraine, leaving dozens injured.
Meanwhile rockets hit a school in the town of Mykolaiv about 100 km east of Odessa, while rescue teams are digging among the rubble.
Meanwhile a green light comes from peace negotiations. Leoanrd Slutsky, Russian negotiator, said that significant progress had been made in the talks and that a common position had been reached with the Ukrainian side.
The development comes after Ukrainian negotiator and presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak also said Sunday that he thought progress could be made in the negotiations in the coming days.
