The European Council has introduced new sanctions against Russia following its crackdown on Ukraine.
The council decided to ban:
– provision of specialized services for the exchange of financial data (SWIFT), for Otkritie Bank, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank, Rossiya Bank, Sovcombank, VNESHECONOMBANK (VEB) and VTB BANK.
This prohibition shall enter into force on the tenth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and shall apply to any legal person, entity or body established in Russia, the rights of which are directly or indirectly owned. for more than 50% by the aforementioned banks.
-invest, participate in or contribute to future projects co-financed by the Russian Direct Investment Fund.
– the sale, transfer or export of Euro coins to Russia or to any natural or legal person, entity or body in Russia, including the Government and the Central Bank of Russia.
Today’s decisions complement the package of sanctions against Russia, previously announced by the High Representative after the video conference of the EU Foreign Ministers on February 27.
The package includes the provision of equipment and supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces through the European Peace Facility, a ban on flights to EU airspace and entry into EU airports by Russians, and a ban on transactions with Russia. Russian state media Russia Today and Sputnik are also banned from broadcasting.
