The April 3 elections in Serbia will bring at least one change before they are held: President Aleksandar Vucic, the candidate of the Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, announced that he will resign from leading this political force.
Vucic: I will be there during the election, and I will certainly influence, as much as possible, the image of the executive. After that, I will leave the party leadership. Ten years on top of it, is a long period, during which however the SNS has not lost anywhere.
Vucic dismissed claims that Belgrade would impose sanctions on Russia, following the one-day parliamentary and presidential elections. “I have never said such a thing. I spoke to the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, in the presence of twenty people, but she did not hear this from me. There are twenty witnesses, ten from Germany and ten from us.
I have said exactly this: I do not offer you guarantees for sanctions, points; “As for the peace in the Balkans, as far as Serbia is concerned, I offer you guarantees”, said the Serbian president, quoted by REL. Serbia is the only country in the Balkan region that has not imposed sanctions on Russia, following the occupation of Ukraine on February 24, a position that is inconsistent with the European Union’s foreign policy when it comes to Russia. At the UN General Assembly session on March 2, however, she joined in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
