Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that Serbia is ready to sign an agreement with Kosovo on persons missing during the war.
“We are ready to sign the agreement for the missing persons. “We are aware that we have to live close to each other.” said the head of the serbian state after laying wreaths at the Monument of the Heroes of Koshare, in Belgrade.
The issue of missing persons during the war in Kosovo, in 1998-99, has been a strong point of conflict between the two countries, and was raised in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia for the normalization of relations, which takes place in Brussels, with the mediation of the European Union.
A senior diplomat of the bloc said that Kosovo and Serbia were very close to signing the agreement, but officially, so far, no such agreement has been reached.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, had insisted that Velko Odallovic be dismissed from the position of head of the Serbian Commission for Missing Persons, as he is a member of the Socialist Party of Serbia, which in the 1990s was led by Slobodan Milosevic.
During the war in Kosovo, about 13,000 people were killed, over 800,000 were displaced, and almost 6,000 people disappeared. Over 1,600 people remain missing to this day.
