European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Friday that China’s reputation is at stake if it helps Russia circumvent international sanctions.
“A prolongation of the war and more disruption in the world economy is not in anyone’s interest.” she said after an online summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
China has refused to condemn Russia for its occupation, while the EU has imposed sanctions on Moscow.
Xi said China and Europe should offer stability in an unstable world following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but did not appear to have offered any proposal to end the war.
European Council President Charles Michel later said China had agreed that this war was threatening global security and the world economy.
On Thursday, a UK spy chief said China would not be helped in the long run by backing Moscow.
