The current Chief of the General Staff of the Albanian Army is the candidate selected by the Socialists for the post of the new president of the country. His name was made public by the chairman of the Socialist Party and Prime Minister Edi Rama, describing him as “the example of that normalcy, citizenship and sense of service to the country and the people of this country for which that office is in urgent need.”
Mr. Rama announced that his candidacy had been selected among many names, where first those who belonged to the socialist parliamentary group were excluded, and then those who had, in a way, connections with the Socialist Party.
“The Chief of General Staff is one of the highest profiles of a country, and experience shows us that among the presidents we have had, the one who came from the armed forces is the president who is not well remembered today, but who will be remembered for a long time “, said Prime Minister Rama, mentioning former President Alfred Moisiu. According to the Prime Minister, “if we trust the representatives of the Armed Forces, and a civil duty of civic life, they generally do not disappoint”, said Mr. Rama.
Mr. Begaj’s candidacy is expected to receive tomorrow the signatures of the deputies of the parliamentary group who have been called to gather at 10.00, two hours before the deadline for submission of candidacies.
The first three rounds were burned without any candidates, as the majority and the opposition failed to reach an agreement to move towards a consensual name. In the fourth round, the Socialists have the simple majority of votes, 70 + 1 deputies, needed for the election of the head of state.
The voting session will be held tomorrow afternoon. Before the name of the candidate proposed by the Socialist Party was made public, the opposition again appeared divided, although both sides agree on the fact that, according to them, this majority does not have the legitimacy to elect the president alone. The chairman of the parliamentary group Enkelejd Alibeaj stated that they will not participate in the session, in order not to legitimize the capture by the majority and the institution of the president. While the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who has taken over the leadership of the Democratic Party, announced that he and the deputies who support him, will be in the hall to vote against.
