The Vjosa Forever concert was held in Tepelena, the biggest awareness event for the protection of the Vjosa River.
Organized as an event called by Eco Albania, the event not only musical but also tourist has gathered in Tepelena hundreds of people to listen to the performances of artists Elida Duni, Shpat Kasapi, Vlashent Sata, Eda Zari, Eugent Bushpepa, Linda Rukaj or actor Florian Binaj and local polyphonic groups.
So far, about 54,000 companies have gathered for the protection of the Vjosa to declare it, together with the branches, Drino, Bënça and Shushica, a large national park and not to allow the construction of dams in their still free streams.
By decision of the National Council of the Vjosa Territory is already a protected area but according to environmentalists the status of a natural park does not guarantee protection. In Vjosa’s days artists, environmentalists, citizens and tourism businesses demanded that Vjosa be declared a national park.
With its current status, Vjosa is still threatened by the Kalivaç and Poçemi hydropower plants but also by oil exploration.
Throughout the event dozens of local tourism businesses unveiled their offer for this season dominated by offers of bars, restaurants, inns, artisans, as well as original finds for entertainment, outdoor activities and evening life.
Visitors arriving for the concert have plenty of opportunities throughout the weekend to live experiences and spend time along Europe’s last wild river. If the Vjosa valley were to be declared a national park it was believed that it would attract about 1.5 million visitors a year with a revenue potential of up to 20 million Euros. The status would also solve the problem of protection for about 1100 species, some of which are endangered.
