Heavy fighting broke out last night in Orebro in central Sweden, between police and two groups of counter-demonstrators, one of whom reportedly sought to burn a copy of the Koran.
Authorities said nine police officers were injured in clashes between local right-wing radicals and their opponents.
Police said the injured officers had “broken arms and were hit with stones”, while a passer-by was injured by a stone on the head.
The demonstration involved only about 200 people according to local media but the developments were violent and dominated by hatred.
This was the second day of clashes before a rally of the radical right-wing party Stram Kurs (Hard Line) led by anti-Islamist Rasmus Paludan.
Three police officers were taken to hospital in the eastern city of Linkoping where riots were also planned to provoke the burning of the Koran.
Reacting to the violence, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that freedom of opinion is guaranteed in the country.
“In Sweden, expression of opinion is part of our democracy. “Whatever one thinks should not lead to violence, we do not accept it.”
“This is the reaction that the organizer himself wanted, to incite people against each other,” she said in television comments.
