For the Kremlin, the Tehran summit was an opportunity to prove that, despite efforts to isolate Russia, it retains powerful allies and geopolitical influence.
There aren’t many places in the world that President Putin can go to get public statements of support for his “special military operation” in Ukraine. Tehran is one of them.
“In the case of Ukraine, if you had not taken the initiative, the other side would have taken the initiative and caused the war,” Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei reportedly told President Putin, adding: “NATO would not have borders. And if it wasn’t stopped in Ukraine, it would start the same war a little later using Crimea as a pretext.”
In a video while waiting for the meeting between the Turkish President Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Putin in Iran, the latter’s body language is clearly visible, which looks quite tense and anxious. From the outside it seems that Putin has changed a little since the beginning of the war, losing weight.
