A seal being chased by a pod of killer whales, otherwise known as orcas, attempted to seek refuge by hiding in a mussel breeding reserve.
Drone footage showed the seal being chased by a pack of eight orcas.
In an attempt to escape, the seal hid between two rope fences at the Grunna Voe mussel farm in the Scottish Shetland Islands.
But unfortunately when she left the site the security cover was captured and killed by the orcas.
Researcher Emily Hague, who studies the effects of man-made structures on marine wildlife, said it was “fascinating” to see how they were used by prey hiding from predators.
But she warned that such creatures may spend more and more time near plants such as fish farms or power installations, where they risk injury.
The footage was shot by local drone operator Nick McCaffrey, who regularly tracks the presence of orcas in the region.
His 38 minutes of footage came from the episode in March.
He said the discovery brings a new perspective on the marine world, on the clash between two of the most capable predators, living near man-made structures and the danger they pose to marine life.
