Hundreds of Venezuelans gathered in the streets of Kuriepe today to celebrate San Juan’s first festival since the pandemic closed.
The festival is a blurry mix of Christianity, paganism and the African heritage of the country’s demographics.
Today was also the first local celebration since the holiday was included in the UNESCO world heritage in 2021.
“As the song itself says, ‘San Juan has it and San Juan gives it to you’, so we get excited when we think of San Juan and prepare to look so great,” says local singer Marilis Blanco.
“I have incredible faith in San Juan because he healed my son when he was near death. “San Juan makes me cry, makes me laugh and makes me dance,” says Venezuela.
Another believer, Norma Soto River, says the festival is a manifestation of the spiritual side, culture and experiences.
“I believe in San Juan Bautista, because God lives in me. “I respect and love him, that’s why he always accompanies me.”
