The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has been awarded the high title “Commandeur de l’Ordre de la Pléiade de la Francophonie et du dialogue des cultures” (Commander of the Order of the Pleiade of Francophonie and dialogue between cultures) by the Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie , in a special ceremony organized yesterday afternoon.
The title, which a year ago was also received by the great Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare, was presented to him by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie, Francis Drouin.
In his speech, President Drouin appreciated the commitment of Mayor Veliaj for the organization of the Francophone Youth Parliament, which is being held this week in Tirana, as well as for policies in support of youth.
The former President of APF, Jean-Charles Luperto, also participated in the ceremony, who said that Veliaj is a man of his word.
“Veliaj is a man of commitment, a man of his words, because in November 2021, on the occasion of the Regional Assembly that took place in Tirana, he invited the Parliament to organize a francophone activity, within the Tirana European Youth Capital. This week, Tirana also deserves the title “Francophone Capital of Youth”. Today, your city is more open to the world and your dynamism has greatly influenced this.” he said.
Jean-Charles Luperto underlined that Veliaj has the merit of creating a new perspective for Tirana, giving a clear message on the first day of his duty as Mayor, with the commissioning of the City Clock.
After receiving the title, Mayor Veliaj expressed his gratitude for the high evaluation and for the selection of Tirana to host the Francophone Youth Parliament.
“I am very honored today, many thanks for the Pleiades Medal. I don’t know if I deserve the Commander’s Order because I’m usually the servant; I mainly deal with trash cleaning, sewage, water supply, cemeteries, tree planting. Not a lot of command jobs, but simple city jobs that nonetheless make a difference in our city. I am very grateful to you today for deciding that Tirana, in the year of the European Youth Capital, will also be the World Capital of Francophonie”, he said.
Addressing the young people who have come to Tirana for the work of the Francophone Youth Parliament, Veliaj said that participation in politics is a way to change reality and make things better.
“There are many people in Albania, but also in Canada, in France, in Africa, in Asia, who say that politics is bad, that politicians are bad. But, in every vocation there are very good people, as there are also very problematic people. This is no reason not to engage in politics. You can change reality only when you go down to the arena, when you go down to the field, to the ballot box, when you say now I will take responsibility, that many of the things I protest about I will be able to vote and change them”. added the head of the Municipality of Tirana.
The title “Ordre de la Pléiade de la Francophonie et du dialogue des cultures” is given to the most important figures in the world, who play an important role in society.
This week, Tirana welcomes the young people of the Francophone Youth Parliament, which brings together deputies and senators from different countries of the world.
