The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj received in a meeting the President of the World Federation of University Sports, Leonz Eder, with whom he talked about increasing cooperation in involving students in various sports disciplines, but also donated the “Clock Tower”. Veliaj said that a good student is not only the one who comes out with 10, but someone who knows how to play in the team, who is active in sports.
“A good student or pupil is not only the one who comes out with 10, but the one who knows how to play in a team, who is active in a certain discipline, in sports, the one who understands that life has both losses and victories. We have excellent students who enter careers in politics, but have never learned that life has a loss and the loss is not tragic, it does not last forever – that life has a victory, but victory is not a moment of arrogance nor victory does not always last. Life is full of losses and victories, but whoever finds the golden mean between losses and victories knows to be a good citizen. Therefore, I see the usefulness of our Albanian Federation of University Sports as a nursery that cultivates character, not only muscles, not only records, not only chronometric achievements, but the character of our boys and girls in the university “, said Veliaj.
The mayor added that teamwork is quality and children should grow up with this spirit of cooperation.
“We have a good start, but it is only half the work. The other half is to add as many disciplines that are included in our University Sports Federation, as many universities, not only public, and not only in Tirana. Only then can we give a university degree that, not only certifies the scientific knowledge that a student has acquired, but also certifies his character. Being on a sports team for any university in the west, be it mainly in the United States or Europe, is one of the greatest achievements on the CV. Today, even in politics, someone running for parliament in Europe or congressman in America puts on his CV that he has been a player on a university team because it shows that he has been more than a good student, he has been also a good citizen and contributor to team play. We need these boys and girls today! ” said Veliaj.
The president of the World Federation of University Sports, Leonz Eder, said that it is very important that education is combined with the culture of sports. “I believe that the DNA of the Albanian people is in sports. I wish you good luck and I am very proud and happy that Albanians will contribute even more in the future for the federation “, he said.
