The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, expresses his condolences for the untimely death of the President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli.

During his visit to Tirana, in February 2020, Veliaj handed Sassol the “Key to Tirana”, as an early friend of Albanians and a supporter of our country’s European aspirations.
The politician had been seriously ill for more than two weeks, canceling all activities. Sassoli was hospitalized in Italy last month due to serious complications with his immune system.
“Sassoli passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at a hospital in Aviano“, Wrote on Twitter his spokesman Roberto Cuillo.
In September last year he was hospitalized in Strasbourg where he was treated for pneumonia, while today, the 65-year-old lost the battle with the disease.
