The alert of the World Health Organization that monkey pox is increasing and is expected to increase further, has led to measures to be taken in Albania, although the risk according to experts is small.
The immunization committee met this Monday and decided that in case the first case is diagnosed, the smallpox vaccine will be injected into close contacts and the medical staff that will treat the affected cases.
“The risk is small but we will vaccinate the case and white shirts,” said Silva Bino.
The smallpox vaccine provides up to 85% protection against monkeypox. This vaccine was applied to the population until the 1980s but was later abolished by the WHO. Symptoms of monkey pox are fever blisters filled with skin, but unlike chickenpox appear at the same stage throughout the body. Suspected cases must be confirmed by a PCR analysis which is not yet done in Albania.
“We are preparing to confirm it in the laboratory at IPH as so far we are cooperating with laboratories in London and the Netherlands” – said Manastirliu.
According to the World Health Organization so far there are 257 confirmed cases in 19 countries outside Africa.
