The year 2022 begins with a rapid increase in cases of coronavirus infections. In the last week of last year, more than two million cases of infections were reported. A number of states were forced to change celebration plans as long queues of people continue to be tested.
As Americans celebrated the new year and said goodbye to 2021, the number of infections continues to rise. A record 2.2 million cases were reported last week, with about four Americans testing positive every second.
In Times Square, about 15,000 people, fully vaccinated and wearing masks, celebrated the turn of the year during a traditional ceremony.
Other cities, from Atlanta to San Francisco, canceled New Year’s ceremonies.
Meanwhile, long queues continued to be tested across the country.
“We were told we had very little opportunity to take the test because about 200 people were in line in front of us. “The clinic closed before it was our turn,” said Lucy Fekade of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.
In the San Francisco area, an education director is distributing equipment for the Covid test before schools open their doors Monday.
“It is going very well. I went and came back quickly. “Everything was fast,” said Jeanne-Marie French, a mother in the Castro Valley.
Meanwhile in Hawaii, a state that is seeing a record increase in cases, local and health leaders are urging people to get vaccinated.
“We are using Hawaiian expressions to encourage people to protect us all,” says Dr. Nalani Blaisdell with the Hawaii Association of Indigenous Physicians.
