US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stressed the “growing concern” of the United States over Russia’s possibility of launching an invasion of Ukraine in the coming days, following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
During the approximately 35-minute phone call, which the official described as “direct” and “professional”, Lavrov indicated that Russia was still finalizing its response to the letter we gave more than two weeks ago, that it would had to go to President Putin. “For his approval, but that will come to us soon without giving any specific timeline and the two agreed that after we get that answer, then it would be appropriate for them to talk,” according to CNN.
The official said Lavrov did not provide details on what the Russian response would be.
Asked by CNN if Blinken told Lavrov that diplomacy would end if Russia invaded Ukraine, the US official said that “if Russia invades Ukraine, diplomacy is dead”, but with any Russian invasion, “we will know, go immediately on the path of cost imposition we have developed over the last two months with our allies and partners, and that would be our main focus. ”
During the call, Blinken stressed the priority he places on the security of American citizens, diplomatic staff and the embassy.
The State Department on Saturday ordered the departure of most U.S. employees directly from the U.S. Embassy in Kiev.
The official told reporters that Lavrov again “denied that Russia had any intention of invading Ukraine.”
