Serious images of police body cameras have been published in the US showing moments when a woman in San Diego was shot dead by officers who were executing an eviction order from home after she stabbed one of the officers.
Footage released by Sheriff Jason Bunch’s office shows officers knocking on the door of 47-year-old Yan Li at the Acqua Vista apartment complex on March 3.
“We have an eviction order,” Bunch was heard saying to the woman, who was later seen with a large knife in her hand, the local daily reported. San Diego Union Tribune .
“Throw the knife or I will shoot you!” calls the sheriff and draws his weapon. “Throw the knife!” he repeats in dramatic scenes.
The resident replies: “How do I know you are not a robber?”
“Drop your weapon, madam or I will shoot you,” the policeman repeated, although the woman accused him of being a fake policeman. The woman asks them to look at the badge, throws their papers on the floor, and slams the door shut.
She continues to scream from behind the door as the police officer continues his calls from outside.
The footage returns to the moments about half an hour later when San Diego police arrive at the scene accompanied by the dog.
Media reported that Lee had previously threatened the complex’s managers and a maintenance worker.
Further in the picture is seen the police entering the apartment of the troubled woman using another key.
At one point the police report the woman’s presence in the bedroom and shoot her with a non-lethal weapon.
But the gun fails to knock down the woman, who attacks the officers and a scuffle starts after they retreat into the hallway of the apartment.
In the middle of the clash some officers are seen falling to the ground and some gunshots are heard.
One of the officers says he was stabbed by the woman, who was shot and is lying on the ground.
The injured policeman was treated for the wound and has been released from the hospital.
The four officers who opened fire have been identified as Daniel Nickel, Javier Medina, David Williams and Rogelio Medina, according to media reports.
Los Angeles civil rights lawyer John Carpenter said the tragic incident was a “classic example of escalating conflict that ends in an illegal murder.”
Carpenter described Li as “a woman troubled by the crisis of losing her home, whose condition was unnecessarily aggravated by law enforcement.”
The four officers were placed on duty inside the police station until the investigation of the event.
Many people who have seen the video on YouTube channel PoliceActivityhave condemned police tactics and say officers should conduct additional training for their duty.
