Three people have gone missing and are suspected to have died after a fire engulfed two communities in Colorado Boulder County, causing the evacuation of thousands of people and the destruction of about 1,000 homes, local officials said Saturday.
Local officials initially said there were no reports of casualties or missing persons after the fire broke out Thursday morning on the northern outskirts of Denver.
The blasts of more than 160 km / h pushed the flames eastward towards the communities of Superior and Louisville, prompting an order for their evacuation.
Within about two hours, the fire reduced more than 24,000 acres of land to ashes, according to local officials.
Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelly said the fate of the three people he did not mention was unknown. All of them lived in houses that were completely destroyed by fire.
“The houses where these people lived have been completely destroyed,Peli said at a news conference on Saturday, adding that specially trained dogs will be used in the search on Sunday.
US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in the region, freeing up federal funds to help those affected.
